Cities of the imagination dominate this program. Oliver Knussen’s witty tribute to Maurice Sendak’s animal kingdom, taken from Knussen’s oneact operatic adaptation of Higglety Pigglety Pop!; Olivier Messiaen’s celestial city of many colours — a piece he compared to the ‘rose window of a cathedral in flaming and invisible colors.’; and Heiner Goebbels’ self-descriptive ‘phenomenon of the city from various sides’. Also on the program is a new work by Australian composer Barry Conyngham, entitled Diasporas, and Michael Bakrnčev’s Sky Jammer, commissioned through the Cybec 21st Century Australian Composers Program.
THE SHOW: STARDUST: a one-man old school cabaret show with a live band, set to air on ABC Radio National.
THE STORY: For over 25 years, a locked wooden dresser sat in the family garage of broadcaster Joel Carnegie - a once prized possession of his grandfather, Col Brain. Col was one of Geelong's most well-regarded musicians of his time - playing in and leading dance, swing, brass and jazz bands. But Col's dresser hadn’t been opened since he died. So what was inside?
Told through the eyes of his grandson, herein lies the discovery of a time capsule of Australian musical life, in a quest to uncover what Col wanted us to know about his life, by the things he left behind...
Playing at the Drama Theatre, Geelong Performing Arts Centre on Friday 6 May 2016 as part of Geelong After Dark - Central Geelong's pop up night of arts.
